Chinese Language School

St. Mary's Chinese Language School was started in 1921 by Dr. Chu Chew Shong to help immigrant children preserve the language and culture of their heritage. It has proliferated into the leading formal Chinese school in the San Francisco Bay Area. Its students reap all the benefits of a long teaching experience and a vast alumni. Here are some facts:

•We now have 600 students enrolled in grades one through twelve, culminating in a St. Mary's Chinese High School diploma.

•Classes are held in the late afternoons, early evenings, weekends, and during the summer. This schedule is designed to accommodate pupils who have day school commitments at either the elementary or high school levels around the Bay Area.

•Those who attend high school elsewhere in the City are frequently able to take a challenge examination to certify their competency from St. Mary's Chinese Language School in lieu of taking regular foreign language courses in their high school curriculum. Academic credit is granted and those daytime hours can be channeled into other courses. Our students generally pass these challenge examinations with no difficulty.

•Classes are taught in Cantonese and in Mandarin, in both oral and written forms. The latter uses traditional Chinese characters. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary and composition, but the lessons imparting these gifts are also used to enrich the student's appreciation of Chinese history and culture.
